Challenge
Our client, Aqwest, manages a vast water distribution network, serving approximately 18,000 properties across a diverse landscape. Maintaining efficient water delivery and minimising water loss is a constant priority for the utility. Aqwest sought a comprehensive approach to leak detection and valve assessment to address these challenges proactively.
Solution
Aqua Analytics was engaged to conduct a thorough investigation of the distribution network, spanning approximately 140 kilometres. The project encompassed:
- Desktop Assessment and Methodology Selection: Aqua Analytics conducted a detailed desktop assessment of the target zone, analysing available data and network characteristics to determine the most appropriate leak detection methodologies. This involved considering factors such as pipe materials, network pressure, and historical leak data.
- Active Leak Detection: Aqua Analytics deployed a three-person team of skilled technicians to perform active leak detection across the 145 km of water mains. The team utilised various advanced acoustic technologies, including ground microphones, correlators, and loggers, to pinpoint leak locations with 1-meter accuracy.
- Valve Condition Assessment: The project also included an assessment of 68 zone valves within the network—this involved testing valve operability and identifying valves that were not functioning as expected or compromising zone integrity.
- Data Reporting and Visualisation: Aqua Analytics compiled all leak and valve data into a comprehensive report, providing the client with a detailed overview of the network's condition. Using high-accuracy GIS, interactive maps and visualisations were created to highlight leak locations and prioritise repairs.
Results
- 51 Leaks Identified: Aqua Analytics successfully located and pinpointed 51 leaks across the 145 kilometres of surveyed water mains.
- Valve Performance Verified: The condition assessment of zone valves ensured their operational reliability, allowing the client to have confidence in zone boundaries.
- Data-Driven Decision Making: The comprehensive report gave the client valuable insights into prioritising leak repairs, optimising maintenance activities, and developing targeted water loss reduction strategies.
Client Benefits
- Reduced Water Loss: The project directly reduced water loss within the client's network by identifying and addressing many leaks.
- Cost Savings: Reducing water loss translated into cost savings for the client, improving operational efficiency and resource management.
- Improved Asset Management: The data-driven approach to leak detection and valve assessment enhanced Aqwest's ability to manage its assets proactively, extending their lifespan and optimising performance.
- Enhanced Network Intelligence: Following the inspection, acoustic loggers and pressure transient monitors were deployed, adding a layer of network intelligence and insight.
Conclusion
Aqua Analytics’ comprehensive leak detection and valve assessment approach significantly benefited Aqwest. The project contributed to the region’s more reliable, efficient, and sustainable water supply by combining technical expertise, advanced technologies, and a data-driven approach. This case study underscores the value of proactive water management in conserving resources, reducing costs, and ensuring the long-term resilience of water infrastructure.
