Challenge
Due to its isolation and limited water resources, the remote community’s water infrastructure faced unique challenges. The system’s lack of redundancy meant pipe leaks or breaks could severely disrupt the water supply. The ability to quickly isolate network sections through operational valves was critical to maintaining water service and minimising waste. However, the condition of these valves was unknown, posing a potential risk to the community’s water security.
Solution
In conjunction with a pipeline condition assessment and network leak detection project, Aqua Analytics was engaged to conduct a comprehensive valve condition assessment throughout the remote community. The project aimed to:
- Assess Valve Operability: Determine which valves were functional, inoperable, or needed maintenance.
- Enhance Network Resilience: Improve the water utility's ability to isolate sections of the network in case of leaks or breaks, minimising disruptions to water service.
- Prioritise Maintenance: Identify valves requiring immediate or future maintenance to ensure long-term functionality.
Methodology
Aqua Analytics utilised the 3S AIG Handheld Valve Actuator, a portable and efficient tool for safe and reliable valve exercises. The team systematically assessed 45 valves across the water network, evaluating their operability, torque requirements, and overall condition. All reporting was captured spatially for easy reporting.
Results
- Comprehensive Assessment: The project provided a detailed assessment of the condition of all 45 valves, identifying those that were fully functional, partially functional, or inoperable.
- Actionable Insights: The utility received a clear report outlining the condition of each valve, the required torque and turns, recommended maintenance actions, and priority for repairs or replacements.
- Improved Network Resilience: By addressing valve operability issues, the water utility significantly enhanced its ability to isolate network sections in emergencies, safeguarding the community's water supply.
- Enhanced Safety: Using the 3S AIG Handheld Valve Actuator ensured the safety of personnel during the assessment process, minimising the risk of injury associated with manual valve operation.
Client Benefits
- Increased Reliability: The project significantly improved the reliability of the water distribution network, reducing the risk of prolonged service interruptions due to leaks or breaks.
- Proactive Maintenance: The assessment's actionable insights enabled the utility to implement a proactive maintenance program, extending the lifespan of its valves and reducing long-term costs.
- Water Conservation: By ensuring the functionality of isolation valves, the utility could more effectively manage leaks and breaks, minimising water loss and promoting responsible resource management.
- Community Well-being: The enhanced resilience of the water network directly contributed to the well-being of the remote community, ensuring a reliable and sustainable water supply.
Conclusion
Aqua Analytics’ valve condition assessment played a crucial role in bolstering the water security of this remote Northern Territory community. By addressing valve operability issues and providing actionable insights, the project enhanced the utility’s ability to respond to emergencies, minimise water loss, and ensure a reliable water supply for its residents into the future.
